Sunday May 17th | Accessing Resilience in an Age of Uncertainty | An Online Self-care Retreat
Our retreats would normally be face to face in beautiful locations in the heart of nature. Our next event was planned for May with the usual donation going to charity Smart Works Reading. The in ‘real-life’ experience might be off the table but the need for content on how to bring balance to life now and build resilience to adapt to the new, post-lockdown world, has never been more needed. I am a passionate believer in the practical applications that Ayurveda and wellness generally can bring, particularly at times of change and uncertainty.
Out of disappointment came invention and we have decided to repurpose our retreat experience for an on-line event. We wanted to achieve three aims: provide practical applications to help us all during these times, raise funds for the charity sector, currently being hit hard, and importantly, support our community carers, for whom self-care may be way down their list of pressing priorities.
The retreat’s aims:
- Empower individuals with practical tools for everyday application to support self-care and resilience
- Make the content accessible via donations
- Raise funds for Smart Works Reading and the Sue Ryder Hospice
- Offer free places to NHS and care workers
- Our panel of self-care specialists will offer insights across different areas of our lives, for a 360-degree, interactive approach to self-care
- The two-hour plus webinar will be divided into 20 minute sessions, allowing you to access as much or as little of the content as you have the time or need for

Smart Works Reading is a non-profit organisation that helps women, across the Thames Valley, to connect with the best version of themselves by giving them a complete outfit of clothing and one-to-one coaching, so that they can succeed in their job interview. Smart Works Reading works with women who have been referred from organisations such as Job Centre Plus, Mencap, Adviza, The Prince’s Trust and Ways into Work. I have been practising yoga for 16 years and having experienced the power of yoga and Ayurveda in my own life, I was driven to learn as much as I could, so I could pass on this amazing approach to others. I’d enter a class with the woes of the world and leave uplifted, inspired, in short – sustained. All this from moving about and breathing! And what a journey it continues to be. I am certified by The Yoga Academy (BWY-accredited, RYs 500 with Yoga Alliance US and Yoga Alliance UK) and am continuing my professional development, having attended courses in Ayurveda with Tarik Davish and Cathy-Mae of the British Wheel of Yoga, weekend Ayurvedic retreats with Dru Yoga and am now studying for a diploma in Ayurveda.
My approach is to use the practices as anchors to develop mindfulness, in an ever more fragmented world, helping us stay connected to our true selves so we can skilfully navigate life’s changes. My focus is on restorative yoga and Ayurveda and my classes offer a safe and gentle practice of asana (postures), pranayama (breathing) and mantra (positive affirmation) and the Ayurvedic approach to wellness.
Individual sessions allow for a more tailored approach to address specific needs and are particularly useful for beginners on the yoga path.
